Rights, dignity and lawful conduct.

Professional security work must be grounded in respect for people, lawful authority and clearly defined responsibilities. CPIS training emphasizes dignity, non-discrimination, de-escalation, documentation and appropriate escalation.

Canada’s rights framework

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Canadian Bill of Rights are important parts of Canada’s legal and civil-rights framework. The Charter generally governs government action, while private security personnel operate under the laws, licences, contracts, property authority and policies that apply to their work. CPIS does not present private security authority as police or government authority.

Operational expectations

• Treat people with dignity and professionalism
• Use communication and de-escalation where possible
• Act only within lawful and assigned authority
• Avoid discriminatory conduct
• Document significant incidents accurately
• Contact police or emergency services when the situation requires public-authority intervention
